The Central Arizona Water Conservation District Board (CAWCD) met Thursday, Aug. 1 at Central Arizona Project’s (CAP’s) north Phoenix headquarters. The meeting began with General Manager Brenda Burman sharing a video regarding CAP’s 2024 summer outage.
Board Champions Lisa Atkins and Karen Cesare introduced a presentation regarding the 30% design milestone for a proposed CAP Water Education Center. Brian Farling principal, Jones Studio, led a brief presentation showcasing the current plans. The Board voted unanimously to approve additional contract authority for design services, with funds coming from the Extraordinary Cost Reserve.
The following items were approved on the Consent Agenda:
- Construction contract for the electro-mechanical relay replacement project (phase 2) at the Brady, Picacho and Red Rock Pumping Plants
- Amended Resolution regarding the use of the water storage tax for the 2023/2024 tax year
The Board additionally heard presentations on:
- Yavapai Apache Water Rights Settlement
- Discussion on possible increase to Job Order Contract limit
- Irrigation Efficiency Pilot Projects
- Colorado River Conditions
- Colorado River Discussions
The CAWCD Board of Directors is a popularly elected, 15-member board. Ten members are from Maricopa County, four from Pima County and one from Pinal County. Members serve six-year, unpaid terms. The board typically meets publicly the first Thursday of each month to establish policy and set rates and taxes for CAP. Meetings are open to the public – in person and via livestream.
