When it comes to the summer monsoon season, the CAP system is protected from flooding by an array of engineering features.

They include overchutes, underchutes, berms, embankments and bypass valves.

“These flood protection features help protect the CAP system,” CAP Engineering Services manager Ryan Johnson said. “And this system – the canal, pumping plants, turnouts and more — is essential to Arizona communities. Our workforce is committed to caring for it all not just during monsoon season, but 24/7, 365.”

The five primary engineering features that protect the CAP system also assist the natural drainage layout, something that was part of the original flood protection design.
