In 1983, the Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl, Every Breath You Take topped the charts and Jenga was introduced at the London toy fair. Closer to home, Reach 1, the first section of the CAP aqueduct was being constructed.
Reach 1 is easily identifiable because it shows the “transition” from the oversized top width of approximately 130 feet to the standard top canal width of 75 feet. It was the original inline reservoir, constructed to hold 5,000 acre-feet of water so CAP could pump water from the Colorado River through Mark Wilmer Pumping Plant off-peak (when power costs are lower) and use Reach 1 to store water for water users in central Arizona.
