You might know that CAP delivers a critical water source from the Colorado River that serves more than 80 percent of the state’s population and 12 tribal communities.

And, you might also know that this 336-mile system connects the state, beginning in western Arizona at Lake Havasu and extending to south of Tucson.

This “Beyond water” series is about lesser-known facts about CAP and how it’s connected to all of Arizona.

Part I is focused on sustainability.

CAP is committed to sustainability and has been admitted by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality into its Voluntary Environmental Stewardship Program, joining an elite rank of only six other organizations in Arizona.

CAP sustainability efforts include:

  • Developing an award-winning recycling, commodity recovery and landfill-diversion program that has recycled, reused and repurposed more than 6 million pounds of material that otherwise would have been delivered to a landfill.
  • Being a longtime partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program, which promotes water conservation.
  • Partnering in the regional Multi-Species Conservation Program for the protection of 27 covered species and their habitat in the Colorado River Basin, including eight federally listed endangered and threatened species. The efforts help balance the Lower Basin Colorado River system operations and water uses with Endangered Species Act compliance.
  • Investing in climate change and hydrology research across the Colorado River Basin to understand the impacts of climate change on water supplies.
  • Utilizing industry best practices to evaluate CAP’s carbon footprint and implement plans for climate adaptation strategies to address climate change impacts across the organization.
  • Entering into purchase agreements for renewable power.
  • Incorporating sustainability into everyday work schedules by offering an alternative work week and hybrid work options in addition to participating in a Trip Reduction Program that promotes carpools and vanpools.
  • Supporting an employee-led ECOTeam that promotes internal sustainability efforts such as electric vehicle charging, green purchasing guidelines and a donations program focused on reuse.
